Bumbo recall (article found at hubpages.com)

Apparently there is a very serious problem with Bumbo baby seats. It's reported that the company is recalling over 1 million Bumbo seats because of reports that 28 children have fallen out of them. Some having serious cranial injuries.
I have never owned a Bumbo seat nor will I now purchase one. This is mostly due to the fact that I have no children and do not plan to have any. So the Bumbo recall does not really affect me. It does however raise the question of where the parents were when their kids where falling out of these Bumbo seats. It also begs the question why would you put your child in the Bumbo and then put it on a high table or counter top and then walk away.
This thing does not come with a seat belt or airbags. There is no safety latch that would prevent a child from escaping. I guess your child should be strapped to a base jumping parachute just in case they start to do things that babies do, like crawl or move or aerobics.
The seats, manufactured in South Africa, were sold by Target, Wal-Mart, Sears, Toys "R" Us, Babies "R" Us, USA Baby and other toy and children's stores nationwide and online from August 2003 through October 2007.

Undoubtedly the parents have a right to be pissed that the Bumbo seat did not warn them that their child was about to pull an escape from Alcatraz. The Bumbo should come with a built-in GPS to let parents know where their child is lying after they have fallen out of their Bumbo. The Bumbo recall should be recalling parents instead. Placing your child unsupervised on a counter top or shelf or on top of the refrigerator is the real problem here.
The bottom of the Bumbo has a warning label that reads: "Never use on a raised surface. Never use as a car seat or bath seat. Designed for floor level use only. Never leave your baby unattended as the seat is not designed to be totally restrictive and may not prevent release of your baby in the event of vigorous movement." I can see how that statement could be seen as ambiguous to some. "Some" meaning 28 sets of parents obviously. So should Bumbo recall the seats? Not in my opinion. It's seems that the ignorance of a few is again dictating the policies and products for the rest of us. It smacks of the Beavis and Butthead controversy, when another obviously well supervised child set his house on fire because he learned from the show.
Maybe someday as a society we will hold parents responsible for their children and there childrens actions. Till then the Bumbo recall is a another reminder that some people should be allowed to have children or at the very least they must pass a competence exam which I'm sure will be held at Walmart.

Hey Kris, thought you might want to add this info to your blog article. Some people may find it helpful.
Hope you are enjoying our bumbo and not putting it on any high surfaces. I was wondering if there was a warning on tipping backwards :) (ie when watching tv any way possible)

Bumbo Recall
For Your Information

You may have heard recently in the media that Bumbos have been recalled. The Bumbo Baby Sitter was removed from store shelves to update the instructions and packaging. The Bumbo Baby Seat can safely be used on a flat ground-level surface. It is not defective and does not need to be returned. No refunds are being offered.
The new packaging strengthens the wording of the instructions to emphasize that the Bumbo Baby Seat should never be used on any elevated surface such as a table, countertop or chair because children can get out of the seat, fall and get hurt.
In addition to warnings currently present on the outer box and on the chair itself, the new instructions emphasize that to PREVENT FALLS never use on any elevated surface. The product's box has also been modified to cover a photo that could confuse consumers about the safe use of the product.
All Bumbos sold at Cater Tot Consignment have been updated, and now have the new packaging and safety leaflet included.
